Question:

9 year old house has a fireplace which seems to smoke a lot. There is no external clean out door but there is a vent in to floor of the fireplace, which is vented to the outside. Should it be open or closed when we use it?

Answer:

Probably open...your house may be tightly constructed and the fire might need the air to breathe.
