I had been looking for a stove to put in my basement. I ended up picking (someone had put it out to the road/garbage) a BV4000. It had been used as an insert, accordingly. I'd like to know if it could be used as a free standing stove? I can have a base made for it. It even has the catalytic combuster still in it. It has 7/1992 as a date code.

If memory serves me correctly the BV4000 was only to be installed as an Insert, I don't think they made a pedestal for it. You can try it but if it is the cause of burning your house down the insurance company will have a good excuse to deny the claim. Do you have to get a permit in your area to install a wood stove? They might want to see the install manual to check to see if it was installed correctly.

It is a nice insert, I would swap out the cat for a new one and change all the gaskets before use.
