My thermometers came in just the other day. As suggested by my manual, I purchased the Rutland Stove Thermometer 701. Placed it on the doors. I also picked up a Raytek MT6 Infrared Thermometer. I got the Rutland for like $15 from Ace & the Raytek for $55 from Amazon. Do not buy the $30 Ryobi from Home Depot. It is garbage. The Raytek is similar to a Fluke (good brand) but cheaper in cost.
I remember a discussion regarding heat & magnets in another thread. On the back label, it states that magnets lose their attraction when exposed to temps + 800. It also states that the 701 isn't designed for double wall pipe. I sent an e-mail to Travis today inquiring about my stove's optimal performance range. He e-mailed back 400-550 degrees. Mental note filed.
Had fun playing with the Raytek today.
