Clearance violations? Where? There is clearly an inch extension of hearth pad before you get to the really old and flammable rug and the very dry looking wooden bench. Surely, that is within code! :)
 
The newspaper and kindling are already smoldering before you put them in the stove. Saves time!

Exactly, it isn't a 'clearance violation', it is 'placement efficiency'. Much like in real estate, wood burning is all about 'location, location, location', and the location of the items in the above photo allow for maximum burnability with minimal effort.
 
I really liked how they put a heatshield on the 8" pipe, because the mantel was close.....
