Question:

We would like to tile the surrounds and hearth of our wood-burning fireplace with marble. Will this affect the function of the fireplace in any way? It works perfectly now and we don't want that to change. Also, what is the proper way to install stone tiles for a hearth? Presently, we have only cement board in place. Do we tile directly on top of it? Should a hearth be raised or not and how should the edges be treated if we are using marble tiles?

Answer:

The choice of a raised or flush hearth is up to you...both have advantages and disadvantages..a raised one has edges that allow kids to bump their heads, etc, but also give you a place to sit or stoop and keeps things and people from rolling or walking into the fire.

The stone tiles can be cemented to the cement board using thin-set adhesive, which is very strong and should take the heat well. Marble on the edges can be installed using a more mastic (flexible) adhesive but make sure the color of the marble adhesive will not bleed through the marble.

This should not affect the function of your fireplace
