I have a small piece of trim on my mantle that sticks out a bit, I have been using my laser thermometer to keep an eye on it and make sure it isn't going to be an issue.

What do you consider too hot for trim?

Wood can pyrolize over time. Thin pieces are more vulnerable. Better to keep it under 170º.
