My favorite novel in the past several years has probably been "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" by Susanna Clarke. It is a long read for sure - but if you are not completely enthralled with it by the 10th page - I'd suggest you give up on it - you probably won't like the remaining 770 some odd pages that follow either....I think it's either a love it or hate it kind of book.
Same with Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy - I think it's one of the best novels ever written but I'm sure a lot of people might find it very tedious reading.
