What creates more heat

Cut, (*split if necessary) & stack whatever is available... here is southern lower MI, the fields are planted, the swamps are wet, the woods are essentially inaccessible so, I scavenge what I can... it all burns; some better than others but, it sure beats being without... especially if we have a similar winter as the last! :)
 
Your stove doesn't convert any matter to energy. The wood is combined with oxygen and converted to carbon dioxide, water, and some smoke and particulates. The reaction releases energy. The energy was stored in the chemical bonds of the wood by the tree, which used photosynthesis and the energy in sunlight to combine carbon dioxide, oxygen, water, and some nutrients into wood.

The only reactions which convert matter to energy are nuclear reactions
