I'm planning/researching for a wood stove. I've considered ceramic tile and rather than trying to coordinate with existing tile, I'm thinking of stone.

What is the stone called that is an inch to two inches thick? Is this "flagstone?"

What does this typically cost? Where do I buy it? Thanks a ton.

When folks build a hearth with a large slab of stone they may use slate, soapstone, marble, granite, bluestone, sandstone, etc. . . . I think most folks buy it at any place that sells stone countertops . . . no idea of the price.

Flagstone is usually slate. It is irregular in shape and it can have 1,2 or 3 straight sides. It is used for outside walkways and patios. Bluestone is nice. A good masonry supply yard carries various stones. Many times it is out on pallets in their yard and you can pick out what you want.
