    North Central Pa.
    had a customer today ask if they could build a chase around an existing lined exterior chimney. The chimney has a flagstone veneer applied to the outside and it is deteriorating

    shure, why not? the liner inside the flue which is inside the chase is well away from any finished materials.

    Remember if using combustibles to build the chase it will require a 2" clearance. Of course that depends on the AHJ. NFPA211-21 "Minimum air space 7.3.1.5.1 Clearances shall be based on good engineering practice and acceptable to the AHJ."
