Recently bought a new home with wood burning fireplace. Have not used it because I don't like having to watch it so vigilantly at night. After a small hearth there is carpeting and I'm afraid embers will spark out and catch fire. So I'm considering a wood burning stove insert to be placed inside this space. What should I expect to pay to have this fireplace retrofitted?

Really depends on the work that has to be done and if your doing it yourself. Also what stove or insert you buy. Anywhere from 1800 to 5k

Post some pictures of the existing fireplace and chimney. Cost will depend on existing setup, ie prefab fireplace, hearth dimensions, type of chimney, location. Existing prefab fireplace may not be be suitable for an insert.

Also describe the house, expectations of insert etc.

You can use an insert or a wood stove. Both will work. an insert will cost a bit more but look finished. It will have to stay with the house and a good wood stove can go with you. Pay attention to the chimney. It needs to be done to code and inspected. You may want to use a stainless flue inside of the chimney. Look around for a used high quality EPA stove. I have picked up 2 late model Pacific Energy stoves for under $500 the past few years. They are the cat's meow and are made in Canada which says something.
