I'm so confused. It appears that the guy I get my wood from doesn't have a clue what he is giving me. So I need your help. Here are some pic's, the first if I now have correct info is cherry but am not sure of the rest.

Lee - I'm thinking #4 is also soft maple. Look at the width of the grain.

Edit: more specifically - spalted soft maple.

    Nope! :cheese:

Annnnnnnnd............... I'd be willing to bet that the tree was cut off the stump when there was lots of sap in it. Prolly sometime between Jan- May.

Could you post a close up pic of the black spot on the wood (lower left side) in the 4th pic of your 1st post. That sure does look like a sap spile hole !

Would love to take another pic for you but I would need a time machine to get me back to yesterday. It burned real good last night :) If it helps any both pieces from pic 3 and 4 from original post were in the stove at the same time. The 1 from pic 4 lasted at least an hour longer before it broke down into coals.

I don't know about northern Indiana but in my part of Indiana they are as common as silver maple. I make Maple syrup every year! Love making it too.
