wet fields have me cutting in areas I don't normally venture. Talked to a person who had a tree company take some trees down and he wanted them cleaned up so I went to take a look.

I thought it was punky white oak when I first looked. Now I'm wondering if it is beech. I don't get a lot of either, so ID'ing from splits is tough for me.
A lot of living red and white oak and beech on his property.

Also got some red elm.

Ugh, glad most of it didn't need split.

Hard to say for sure, the bark in the first pic resembles maple. It also favors cherry bark oak.

the axe appears to be sunk into red oak
but the spaulted wood appears to be something else.
what maple and beech looks like when left dead standing for a bit too long.

I agree with Billb3. The round with the axe marks is definitely oak, I am not sure what kind. The split with the spalting could be maple or beech; it isn't oak.
