I am installing a new auger shaft, bearing, and motor. When I tighten the bolts all the way on the bearing (I carefully followed installation instructions provided by Englander on a utube "heat redefined" video) the auger shaft will not turn. It turns fine until I tighten the bolts all the way. Is if possible there is a problem with the new auger shaft and new auger bearing I purchased?

Not having seen the video, do they give you torque specs? It sounds like you're over tightening. Did you grease the collar before reinstalling?

Hello Eric,

Thank you for your reply!

They didn't provide torque specs but the auger is binding even after just tightening by hand. Here is the link to the Englander video on installing an auger and bearing:

. I have also received multiple instructions on tightening in a crisscross fashion. Also gently tapping the end of the auger to free it up if it is binding while going through the tightening sequence.

Moreover, I followed the instructions that are on this site about prepping the auger and tube:

I did not grease the bearing before installing. Englander says their auger bearings don't need to be greased. I bought an aftermarket bearing from stoveandgrillparts.com and also ones from pellethead.com. The new bearings turn but do not have any play/rotation/float. Maybe the bearings are faulty? Maybe they are a different style that require greasing before installing? Maybe the new auger shaft is faulty (bad mold)?

By "greasing the collar" what exactly are you referring to? Are you talking about the bearing?

Did you change the gasket also? Well I do know metal to metal will cause friction. Not that grease is the needed component. Did you purchase OEM parts or aftermarket?

Hello Ssyko,

Thank you for responding.

Yes, new nylon gasket. These were aftermarket parts from two different retailers. One of them is sending me OEM bearings free of charge. I also ordered new bearings and auger shafts from Englander directly. I think the bearings are faulty, but I will know more once I receive the OEM bearings and augers in a day or two.

When I mentioned the collar its what you're most likely referring to as the bearing. My PDV (vintage 2008) has grease zerks on them, just a quick squirt of some High Temp grease once a year.

Is there any reason you changed the bearings other than you were changing everything else? I've changed several auger motors and never changed out the bearings.

The stove was making lots of noises and I was going through auger motors every year. I figured I would do a maintenance overhaul. I don't know anything about bearings and I am just learning about my pellet stove. When I took out the old bearings I thought that they were bad because they move like this.

After I replaced the auger bearings and did a test run, my top auger broke. So I figured I would replace the auger shafts, gaskets, bearings, and motors. I also replaced the combustion blower fan.

A few years ago I had a top auger jam that was caused by the door latch mechanism coming off and jamming the auger. I was not sure if this may have impacted the auger and auger bearing, causing motor failures and intermittent mis-starts and a few smoke backs into the room.

Understand where you're coming from! For grins, did you try the old shims with one of the new bearings? I'm wondering if the new shims that you received were thinner and hence allowed you to "overtighten" and bind them up.
