52i door gasket damage

Just after 2 seasons of burn, surprised door gasket not doing so well - may have to replace. rest of gasket is fine except for lower left area. No rough spots/welds, so not sure why the damage.

Also too, had to fire up today for deep clean. Had running 2 weeks ago and lost power. went to clean today and the inside was an oily/soot type mess. Hopefully running it will dry things out.

Many new stoves have the stand white rope gasket. I always recommend the graphite impregnated gasket. It is better quality and lasts longer and does not stick just after it is installed.

Where do I get it? There is nothing impeding the gasket to properly seal.

There are essentially two types of gasketing rope used for door seals, high density and low density. Most of the white gasketng rope you find is high density and the grayish rope is usually low density. Typically, if the gasket is being used in an application where the seal is made by closing a knife edge into a gasketing channel, a low density gasket is used. If the seal is made by closing the gasket to a smooth surface, such as the face wall if the stove body, high density gaskets are used. There are exceptions and there are many different types of gasketing, many are specialized for specific purposes such as glass tape buffering strips and tadpole types gaskets. Install gasket rope is also a bit of a science. Never pull the gaskets tight when installing. Always use some type of silicone or milpack as a adhesive and do not clap the door shut to set the gasket and make the seal. Too much compression will force the adhesive silicone into the gasket fibre and cause the gasket to go stiff. When possible make your ends on the hinge side of the door. If you aren't sure what gasket you need or are purchasing, it's a good idea to just buy the correct gaskets from the dealer. You won't wreck your stove but the seal may not work and some of this gasketing rope can be pricey for what it is.

Water and ashes from the stove and dry towel clean. Works like a charm.

Or you could just give him a link... Strange you want to communicate via email outside of the forum about part sales. I think the 52i uses 3/8" low density flat buffering tape I'm heading to the warehouse I'll get back to you on it.

The 52i uses a 1/4" flat buffering tape gasket. Harman part number is 1-00-2312. I checked out the gasket today. It's really a poor gasket IMHO and I'm not surprised that it is fraying. Some of the loops in the new package I looked at was already coming apart. If you can find a 1/4" flat gasket such as the one used in Vermont Castings would work fine too and seems to be of a better quality.

The 1/4" flat tape gasket part # 1-00-2312 is for the high temp glass that goes in the fire door. The fire door gasket itself part # 1-00-00888 is the standard white 3/8" diameter round rope door gasket. I do suggest the higher quality graphite impregnated rope gasket that does not stick on initial fires.

That's the thing, the 52i in this photo and the one I installed today don't seem to use the 3/8" rope. It's more like a flat gasket akin to the glass tape.

Page 31 of the Harman 52i manual states Fire Door Round Rope Gasket 3/8" Diameter -- 30 Feet long
This is the same size for all Harman model fire doors, so not very likely it is different.
The round rope gasket does gets flattened with use but I have installed many, all 3/8" round.
