Many of the big box stores seem to be going to proprietary packaging for their pellets. There's got to be some smokey back room dealing going on with their pellet suppliers that lets them leverage pricing vs market demand and availability. They're laughing all the way to the bank this season on the question if this is a perceived vs actual pellet shortage seemingly going on now.

It's just marketing. They can't use the same bags or names with both their big box clients and their Mom & Pop clients or boutique stores. This happens in many places, Sears does it, Bausch & Lomb got caught selling the exact same lenses in three different packages with three different prices so they could appeal to the thrify buyer, the sort of quality but bargain hunting buyer and the I want the best no matter what it cost buyer. Last year at Home Depot, they had Green Supremes under another name and different color bag. A distributor for GS was the one who spilled the beans.
