If you want a high level on what the grid used to be and how it needs to respond to the changes in the market and the onset of renewables this article is about as good as it gets to simply what is very complex issue. Think Rubiks cubes with far more colors.

I'll have to leave this one up to read when I have a bit more time, but I'm glad a relatively mainstream media outlet (IEEE Spectrum doesn't really qualify as mainstream) is attempting to dig into the topic of grid management and the way it is changing as we change our energy portfolio.

A nice article explaining the policies. Seems like the writer was going for 'drama' though. In the end this stuff is pretty boring and works.
