Big Ash Is Down

I dropped a big Ash (Blue Ash) a couple of days ago. It's no giant but respectable. Been hauling it down the the hill for splitting and stacking. It was a victim of the "little green monster."

The picture of the splits is all of the main trunk I've already split and stacked. I finished splitting the rounds in the picture just after taking the picture. All split with a sledge and wedges.

There are still 2 more logs, about 18 ft in length and 8" to 12" in dia., up there yet to get down and split. I've got 3 more Ash trees as big or bigger to drop yet, all due the EAB.

One of my favorite pictures on here! I should show my wife this picture so she knows what a big ash looks like! I'm tired of her saying she has a big ash!

Looks to be allot of nice straight grained, solid wood from one tree.
It will split, stack & burn to ash nicely

Oh yea, Steve has a nice big ash, too

2 ash trees, it that "ashes", to become "ashes" or they both have "ashes"?

Dennis, No way! This was in my son's nioghbor's back yard. Doug did the wrestling. Chief just pulled the handle.

Blue Ash, huh? I don't think I've even seen one, much less burned it. Looks like its limited range doesn't quite reach this area, although it includes most of IN and a big part of the middle of KY. Easy splitting, like White? Have you ever burned any? I'd guess it would be a medium-heat wood like the other non-White varieties of Ash...

Not much diference in splitting or burning between blue and white ash Woodie. The bark on the blue is somewhat flakey compaired to the tight deep furrowed bark of the white. I actually posted a picture of the same tree (still standing) back in Feb or March trying to get an id. There was quite a flap over what kind of maple it might have been! It was late, late spring before it had leaves, and then only a few in the crown, before I was sure of the id.This tree won't get in a fire until the winterof 14 - 15.
