I was surprised to see my local Big Y was selling Maine Wood Pellets at $250/ton. Thats seems like a good price to me for my area. I paid $259 for a ton of the Maine Wood Pellets back in April. You have to buy them by the ton and I don't need any more pellets so I didn't ask about delivery.

Which Big Y?

Also saw this same thing at the Big Y in palmer.

sounds like all big y, mine in Naugatuck also running this for $250/ton.

hmmm...i have a 10% coupon for my order of $60 or more. I wonder if this would work for 5 tons of pellets!?

If you have your heart set on buying Maine's Choice pellets this heating season, you probably shouldn't wait to long to take advantage of these prices, simply because with their explosion a couple of weeks ago, they will be down for the season and probably not back till maybe spring or even summer of 2010..so when this inventory is gone, it can't be replaced and I'm betting the Big Y's of the world don't carry real large inventories of pellets......sort of like buying somethings at Costco, you better buy it when it's there, cause if you come back in a couple of days, they just might be sold out..and won't be replaced.

They're talking about Maine Woods (or worst) Pellets, NOT Maine Choice Pellets which had the fire.

I'm sorry...I stand corrected..if you are talking bout Maine Woods...then that is cat of a different color....Big Y is paying you $250 to take this stuff off their hands????....LOL

Are these really that bad? Have you burned them? I know they dont list ash content or anything on the bag, so i assume a lot of ash emptying will be involved..

The 2 tons they had in front of the store i bought for $450 this afternoon. couldn't pass up that deal. thanks for the heads up!
I dumped an open bag into my hopper and there were zero fines/dust. They look like a quality pellet, but who knows.

did you have to hasle to get them at $225/ton ?

nope. they were marked at $250 and my wife gets 10% off your next visit coupons all the time, so i used that

Do a search on here for Athens or Maine Woods Pellets (same thing) ~ they were a horror show last year when they started up ~ which may be the generation of pellets you are purchasing.

I havent heard one good review of Maine Woods Pellets... very very dirty. I did hear this years batches are better.....not sure if that all of the old stuff is gone or not.

Did you get them from the one in Torrington. Paying 225/ton makes it an even better deal, good thinking using a coupon. I burned one bag back in May when I got a ton from CT Pellet. Hard to tell much from one bag but I wouldn't complain about them. Decent heat output I don't remeber there being any more fines than any other brand and ash doesn't bother me to much i clean my stove out every other day when its burning.

ya, torrington
they don't have a fork truck so we had to load the bags onto my truck by hand...wouldn't be fun if i wasn't a young buck!

I want to see if they have any more out front next time I go. The Lowe's next door has tidy timbers for 289/ton I think it was i got 4 bag to try this seaon.

Does Big Y have forklifts to load them on a truck?

Kinda off topic....we dont have the stores Big Y around here..... kinda makes me curious on how they came to picking the name Big Y for their stores....lol. Sorry.

not the one in torrington...
also drove by the big-y in southwick mass and they had a sign by the road for $250/ton

the compition is great...hopefully it drives the prices down elsewhere

I agree with BTU on this, I wouldn't buy all my winter supply of pellets, Unless they guarantee them. Bringing back 4 tons would really stink. You will have to do all the work yourself. You might get luck if they have someone help unload the bad ones. I always try before I buy the bulk amounts.

Don't get me wrong, I buy some pellets from the big box places. Just not my whole supply. I had an issue with wally world one year. Had a challenge getting them to take back the 25 bags after the 14 day crap. So I will only buy them when I am in burning season. That way I know there good or bad with in the 14 day thing they have.

What I am trying to say if you bought now and didn't burn till October, Are they going to replace any bad bags or Batch you might get???

I would at least ask before the purchase. Maine woods are a iffy pellet at best. If you get the old batch and you stove clogs up every other day. I would at least want a replacement pellet?

Be carefull with a bulk purchase. Unless you have a multifuel stove that doesn't care if the pellets stink.

just my 2

P.S.

For $9.00 more a ton. You can get them from CT Pellet. He will replace them for you with out hassle if they are junk! Stands by what he sells! Might be worth the extra cash!
