Hello all ... thanks to some people I can no longer find on this forum (sorry!) I have diagnosed and fixed a problem with our VC Encore cat stove. It is a pain to light, but when lit and in cat mode, no matter where the rhs air control was set, it ran at between 550 and 600 degF on the griddle, burned our wood up, and chased us out of the room.
The issue -- thank you, someone -- was that the ash pan door seal was mostly off, thus allowing air in the bottom of the stove at all times. A bit of stove glue to the gaskets, push them into place, and suddenly our stove can be controlled again.
A good lesson to remember: look to the very simplest things first!
