Can anybody identify this material from cleaning my drolet escape 1800 for the first time? Pretty sure it was sitting on the baffle.

Ran the stove for two months brand new last season. It looks like a sanding sponge and is brittle. The flue has barely any creosote on it. I supposed it could have been there through the shipping process as well.

What type of chimney is the stove hooked up to?

Looks like your baffle board is junk.
Don't run the stove without it, all your heat is going straight up the chimney

After a third look, I think that is one of your firebricks... Drolet uses some lightweight bricks in some models

How thick is this material? If 1" or less than it's probably baffle material. Look at the board above the secondary tubes and see if there are holes and gaps. If the flue was cleaned top down, look at the baffle toward the rear of the firebox. The rods may have impacted the baffle board and shattered it.
