Chopper 1 mauls

Ever hear of them? My wood guy just used one to split apart some pieces for me to test. I've never seen a maul with moving parts on it. My maul is the red plastic handled one from Lowes and it's always worked well enough. He said these are no longer made and go for $150+ and are only available used.

Again, any experience with them? Are they worth it?

I've heard the spring loaded pawls can break.

For $20 I'd take a chance, $150 forgetaboutit.

I have seen a bunch of those with broken pawls, I bought one at a garage sale in 1979 or 80 for $5 and I think I overpaid. It may have been the red oak I was splitting but the 8# maul was quicker and easier.

I've used them many times. A nice gimmick, but other designs proved better - which is why you can no longer buy them!

I used them as a kid and they worked great although we did have to replace a spring or two. like webbie said other designs work well too. I still see one every now and then at a hardware store or tractor supply.

I think my brother has one in his garage. Never seen it in use though, there's always been hydraulics around.
