The Stove is an Avalon Newport Avanti PS...

It has been a nice stove.....
Just this year, fan was/ is binding..... thought
it was perhaps a pellet..... I managed to get it
to want to spin.....
(I think the bushing is worn inside, which causes the
cage to slide over perhaps? and jam)
So during this testing process.............

I would come across a lit stove that sounded like
the convection fan was not running..... I would either
throw multi meter on it.... or spin the fan with a finger...
I then found(I think,, but still in process of testing this aspect)
that if I push the shaft of the cage in towards blower housing
I could get the fan to run.......)
[this all is just speculation......Still trying to determine if the
fan ,,,, actually "the seizing of the fan cage" is due to the bushing and wear,, causing excesive play
]

So where is things now you may ask????

Well, somewhere along the line... while testing the convection fan...
I caused the control board fuse to BLOW...........

I replaced the fuse...... but now it seems like the fan.....
continues to run and never turns off................

I just ran the unit on manual....(removed the skytek unit thermostat system)

A ways in......(but it was running ok).... I had a blinking light......
It was the # 2 light blinking......(to me this doesn't make sense)

So I got out the manual...........

Stove was running well....(on manual run)...

By the time I got to the section that I needed,,,,,,, I found
that the machine/appliance had stopped running........
but now........MAINT REQ'D light was blinking along with the #4 lite blinking.....

I placed the fan on OFF I have been listening to the
the convection fan run.... while writing this post

I will continue to do a couple things..... I will clean some
stuff... but, I believe things are pretty clean..... I vacuum
the unit (every bag.... to every other bag....)
I don't use the ash hopper... I have a really nice vacuum... so
I find it better to just suck it all out....
THanks! ,,,,, AVP

Yeah the fan is whooped if you have end play like you discribed.

Well, somewhere along the line... while testing the convection fan...
I caused the control board fuse to BLOW...........

the fan is drawing a lot of amperage trying to run, that is what is blowing fuses.

I replaced the fuse...... but now it seems like the fan.....

May have burned out a Triac on the control board, troubelshooting the fan. if the triac failed they usually fail to a short and it will allways have voltage. if they Pop they will not pass voltage. I would replace the convection blower first, hopefully it didn't cook the board

Thanks for the quick response....

Triac..... that would explain why the fan never stops running.... and even if
I unplugg the appliance.... come back hours later and plug it in, the convection fan still is running....

I agree with you on a fan will draw more amps and cause a fuse to blow......
My case I believe was with the tester across the terminals of the convection fan while
it was seized....... Pretty sure that is when is blew the fuse.......

Soooo I ran the appliance again....

But, I did look over some stuff.... the nipple in the exhaust blower housing was clogged
So I cleaned that....

plugged it in..... yup fan already running......

appliance ran for about a half an hour..

and the stopped.. blinking Maint. req'd..... with #4 lite blinking.... but (seems like #4 lite is not yellow but green)

I don't know if the #2 lite went on .... I will check and see.... (paying closer attention)

Yeah, I vacuumed out the chimmney about a week ago.. all the way to the exhaust blower..
The unit is pretty clean..........

I kind of feel that these errors are erroneous...
(meaning that they don't make any sense --- happen due to possibly the control board malfunctioning)

FOR EXAMPLE:::::

I just started it again.......

and looked for blinking lites. (there shouldn't be any)
BUT, the #2 lite is blinking ---- The Maint req'd lite is not blinking...............

So that is where things are at the moment....

will post again..... when stove kicks off..........

Thanks, AVP

Ok,

So I started up..........
and the #2 comes on blinking immediately.

appliance will run for about 1/2 hour...
and then auger stops..... (maint req'd #6 lite)......
and if you turn it off...... you can turn it back on immediately........

That is what I just did..... turned it off... then turned it on again......

(((((( so I just want to put in some background info on the appliance
I has been in my use for about three years...... AND not one single
problem......... has run flawlessly the whole time........ like I said...
always got vacuumed out............

so the cleaning that was done recently...........

the exhaust blower and pipe to outside ( outside pipe definetly needed it.... exhaust blower was not bad)

the nipple in the the exhaust case... (to the flow diaphram -- this I cleaned today.... It was clogged)
( I have never cleaned it since I owned it.... I suspect it has not ever been cleaned)

Thanks, AVP let me know what you think.............

I would unplug the stove and pull the control board and inspect it with a magnifying glass check for burned traces, components.

Yeah, So no really visible signs on the "board frying"....

BUT,,,,,,

looking at the pins on the board respectively.......

AND taking Ohm readings amonst the pins.... (Here is my findings)

OHM READINGS:

Pin Pin Ohm

3 to 7 300 line to return(common) black-> white
3 to 5 0 line to convection fan black -> brown
5 to 7 300 convection fan feed and return(common) brown->white

3 to 1 inf. line to ignitor black -> black
3 to 4 inf. line to exhaust blower black -> black

************************ optional reading *******************************
pin three being black line voltage
pin five being brown feed to convection fan
pin seven being white return from convection fan
pin one being black feed to ignitor
pin four being black feed to exhaust blower
*******************************************************************************

So drawing on this to come to some conclusion......

Line voltage should be infinity across all blacks.. and for that matter the brown as well....
It is the circuitry of the board which should switch these from OPEN to ClOSED

As for the black to white(first one up top) (3 to 7) (line to common)
here too Should be OPEN (instead getting 300ohms)

So the board has some "continuity leakage"

What are you thoughts?

Parts to replace?

THanks, AVP

When all gets considered and I go fetch parts....

I will definitely get a door gasket and install it......
the dollar trick revealed a little looseness when pulled
I also took a high powered LED and through it in the burn pot facing upward
and closed and latched the door. this revealed some "light leakage"
through the gasket mating surface....

prior to any of this..... the appliance was running great....

Started with the convection fan not spinning... (due to wear I am figuring)

using a multimeter caused the fuse to pop on the board.....

got a new fuse..... installed it... and now machine runs

with convection fan continually spinning(appliance has to be unplugged to make fan stop)

appliance will only run for about half an hour...... then stops...(saying maint required)

What your thoughts? I think the board is fried.............

appreciate ideas...... Thanks, AVP

When my board has tanked, both my fans run continuously even unplugging and plugging back in does not help.
Your board sounds like it is toast.

Time for a new board ;)

Time to spread some butter on it!....

Parts are coming.......

I have a convection fan on it's way also.......

What are the tricks to installing the convection fan?

The oneside of stove the mounting bushings are easily accessible, the exhaust fan side is inaccessible.....

What do people do?

Well,

All the parts are in....... and installed

OEM convection fan - Installed

Control Board - installed

New Door Rope - Installed...

Where are we now???????

Fan in not continuously running as before.... ( this is good!)

***** just looking for a confirmation here.. the documentation could phrase the situation better for adjusting between
Stove sizes when installing a new board ****************************
( to configure for small stoves --- Newport like mine)
[ I press auger and up fan and down fan at same time --------- lites blink twice.....time to let go!!! THAT"S the method???]
***********************************

STOVE STILL KICKS OFF at about 36 minutes in......
It does not seem to get out of start up cycle(lower light blinks the duration.....)

just at the moment the the control board blinks"maint req'd, I believe I hear snap discs "SNAP"...

Maybe a blew out the snap discs????? (like they/or one of them are toast also???)

Can I make jumpers and remove them???
Trying now to::::
See if I get past this "Maint required" issue........

What you ya think?

I just want to get it to run...... and then ......
I can replace the bad discs (probably easier than fixing bad discs in my back...)

Thanks, AVP

Just an additional piece of information.....

I have the restrictor pushed in all the way.....
always have had it that way.............
I pull the restrictor outward....... (seems like too much air...)

My flame is kinda white... I would say......

Again, this is how it has been set for three. and half seasons....

thanks, AVP

Appliance is now running on manual

I bypassed the Hopper Snap Disc...

Appliance came on in about 10 minutes.....

[ So basically, the stove would sit in start up sequence for
about a half an hour. The lowest light would finally stop blinking..
and then the auger would cease to spin.
]

I will pickup a hopper snap disc, in m travels.
