You are the only one that can judge that based on the burn rate and your draft. Practice. Practice. Practice.

The most likely thing is that it would smoulder the fire. Cut off the draft and the burn can't continue. Though key dampers in the pipe only cut off around 80 percent because of the holes in them.

What is your chimney setup?

You should be fine without a damper. That is really close to the chimney that stove was designed for. Hard to imagine it over-drafting on that pipe. If it isn't burning hot then it is something the damper isn't gonna fix.

I also have the savannah and I emailed drolet the other day to ask were to install my probe thermometer at above or below the dampner. Here is what they said.
"The draft damper you installed …please check with the local bylaws as in some areas this is not allowed ….we as a manufacturer do not recommend or support this installation."
Also are you using the fresh air intake setup or not.

If you have a tall chimney and a strong draft and your stove overfires will they replace it free of charge, I think these manufactors need to reconsider what they recommend.

I kind of was thinking the same thing so needless to say I left mine in just leave it open and figured if I need it I will use it regardless to what they say.
