This is something I conjured up in some spare time. The Harbor Freight bottle jack was less then $20 and it functions flawlessly in the vertical position. I made a "T-bolt" for the hydraulic release and fitted a return spring. It is made from 2" & 2.5" square tube and some bar stock. All mild steel. MIG welded.
The wedge can be set at 1.25" increments with a .500 dowel pin. I keep this by the wood stove when I need to split down a big piece for starter kindling. Works like a charm. Anything too long for this splitter will not fit in the stove.
