Hello, I just purchased a new englander pellet stove, im on my fourth bag of pellets and cant stand the whining noise coming from stove , it appears to be the exhaust blower fan. has anyone had this problem. and is there anything i can do besides the scrap yard.

Hello
I have seen that problem a few times. Englander now uses a close frame exhaust blower (ie The Black Case) for many years. The whining noise does not happen on many stoves but when it does it can be very annoying! I put in a brand new OEM blower on 2 stoves with that problem and the new blower did not fix it! Then I put in a better open frame blower and that was the cure!
So good luck!

Mine hums and changes pitch with heat setting. Not annoying per-say, but not quiet either...

this does not change its the same from start up to shut down. you can here it when you come in the house. two rooms away. i have to find a fix or look for another brand.

Question: grinding/whining or more whistle like high pitch noise? Does it start when the stove is first lit or after a while?

There are two holes under the front of the stove that feed the air wash over the glass. Cover them and see if it stops.

I just got done pulling the stove apart. checked. nuts and bolts for tightness. blocked off some holes left some open nothing helped.then i hot wired the exhaust fan motor and the same irritating noise was there .so im sure it is the exhaust fan unit, fan sounds fine when bench tested. will wait and see if new fan assembly for correct the problem.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Im new to this, what does open frame exhaust blower, mean. does the noise come from the fins inside the blower housing or from the fins on the motor. i moved the fan mount around a little and the noise would change briefly..just trying to find a solution. thanks again

An open frame motor does not have a case around the winding's, but rather a metal frame (usually square)

The noise sounds like a harmonic that's setting up in the motor.

You can try this if you like.

Get a casablanca fan controller at the hardware store. Wire it in between a power source and the motor.

Turn the unit on and then adjust the fan speed up and down a bit and see if the noise changes.

Run the fan at full line voltage first, if no whine then connect the fan speed controller and try it.
(You hot wire it so ???)

Mess with various speeds close to full speed and see if there is a sweet spot.

The unit may have a triac in the controller to run the exhaust fan at a predetermined speed ????

If this be the case the power may be "Dirty" as in the wave form is not perfect and is causing a harmonic to set up.
A crappy triac can cause whine noises. Although not generally detrimental to the motor it is a PITA to listen too.

Check the power coming to the motor and see if it's full line voltage or not.

This may be a mechanical noise, as in a vibration that is causing some sheet metal in the stove somewhere to vibrate and magnify the sound.

Another idea

Remove the fan blade (impeller) and stuff the unit back together and try it.

The impeller may be out of ballance

If this stops the noise, get a new AFTERMARKET blade and try.

All it take is a slight harmonic setting up in the fan blade to make a buttload of noise

Also make sure the fan is running TRUE and not wobbling.
Even one petal on the blade out of alignment can make things hinky

Good luck

thanks very much, Pulled motor off stove and removed the impeller . reinstalled the motor on the stove and the sound was there, so appears to be the motor making the sound, is there another make of motor. other then what they have on there now that i can use on this stove.

If you wired it up direct to a 120V source that will rule out a triac issue.

See if you can get a different brand of motor.

Check this out.
Is this the same type of motor ???

This is an open frame motor.

If yours is a round enclosed motor, try the open frame unit as they are much less likely to whine.

Install the entire kit if you decide to go this route, then you will eliminate all components that were involved in the whine.

Try one of those units off ebay.

I bought one like it (slightly different) for my Whitfield

Very smooth and quiet.

Good luck

thanks again. my motor is a round enclosed unit.
Make sure the housing is not loose! The crimped outer motor housings (Cheap Design) sometimes come loose. I needed to re-stake my motor housing due to it's excessive vibration.

I didn't know Gleason Avery made blower motors for our stoves. I bought GA's for auger motors, and they are much better built than OEM.

Thanks . already checked the housing. everything tight. i will try new exhaust motor from englander first. but if its the same as the one that came on stove , not very hopeful of a fix .

You will need to remove the motor to check it. If the outside housing moves and the plate on the output side does not move, you have a loose crimp.
I could not figure that one out, and my friend was over when I removed it, he grabbed it and said "Look, it's a cheapass motor!" and showed me how it was loose. I'll see if I can find a picture and indicate where I am talking about.

Not your exact motor picture, but you should be able to figure it out from this picture.

Thanks Bill. Yes thats the same motor housing, i see where the crimps are but mine are tight. cheaply made.. i thought englander would be a good choice to buy. but iam a bit disgusted with it right now.

Get one of the little open frame ones, it should be loads better

I received the exhaust motor today. it came complete with blower housing and gaskets. the noise has almost gone. my wife can stand to be in the same room now. once Christmas is over. I will be ordering a open frame blower .
