Englander questions

I am in the market for a new stove. I will be purchasing in september. I have narrowed it down to 2 models.

1.
55-TRPCB120 - I like this model except that the room air blower is only 150 cfm. I could live with that *but* it concerns me that its for sale on amfm energy but its not listed on englanders website. was it discontinued? maybe it was a problematic unit?

2. 25-ip Imperial. I like the 250 cm blower and the auto on/off by thermostat. only holds 80lbs of pellets. i can live with that too but would rather the hefty 120lb hopper capacity of option 1.

can anyone chime in on the reliability of each stove?

I have simple requirements that i learned i need from owning my 25pdvc - It must auto start and stop from a thermostat. It must hold a min of 2 bags of pellets. It also must be easy to clean and fairly reliable.

the 25 pdvc will move to its new home in the dining room, as a backup stove or extra help in case of below zero weather.

Hi. I have the TRPAH that is similar to your first choice. This is my opinion about auto on/off..
If the house is well insulated this feature can work good, but if is not, by the time that is going completely off it will be kicking back on again. In shoulder season can be possible thàt with a well insulated house the system works great without a lot of stress of on/off. I think that is a lot of stress on the ignater. I like it but I end after awhile with the settings on high/low when real code outside. I also have the 55trp22 but that one just have the option of high/low with wall thermostat. The TRPAH can also be use with their remote control.

Why not get a super reliable powerhouse like a Quadrafire CB1200 with it's huge ashpan and large hopper that blows out a whopping 48k BTUs that is made from the ground up to work on a T-Stat with it's special Loop Igniter! The igniter is mounted on the front of the fire pot and the stove starts up much faster!! (Start to fire in 3.00 minutes flat!)
What I like about it is the patented Anti Jamb corkscrew auger! The stove is super reliably for all it's parts!
You can drop a bolt in the hopper and it just pushes it up the auger chute and drops it into the burn pot. If a bolt or screw fell into the hopper of any other pellet stove it would totally DESTROY the auger and auger motor. I have seen it happen quite a few times
I picked up this one made in 2006 with all original parts for $400.
All I did was vac out the ash and it started up like it was brand new!

Drop Englander a line and find out first hand about your questions. They have a very good customer service dept. Maybe they can offer a optional bigger fan.

A properly adjusted thermostat with a wide swing can help eliminate frequent on and off cycles

Market in my area is flooded with used pellet stoves right now. Will see how that turns out if the oil industry cant get going soon and the fall is cool and farmers have to dry a big chunk of the corn with propane. Distilled products are going up as fast as the rain is falling in Houston

I agree with your experiences regarding on/off. i want to use it however in an unconventional manner. during the heating season i wouldnt have it do that. It's the period right before and after heating season is the problem. I would use a programmable thermostat and leave it on say 50 during the day, but have it set to come up to some high number like 75 a few hrs before i wake up. My current pdvc either makes me leave it on 1 all night if the morning is going to be chilly, or wake up and turn it on but by the time i leave for work its barely taken the chill out.

I dont want to be in a situation where im stuck having a dealer service my stove.

bioburner, thank you for the info. that is worth a shot. I can deal with the smaller fan. what i think is that at 150 cfm the air coming out is less, but also hotter. with the 250 cfm blower, you get more air but it is cooler. primarily what i would ask Englander is why the "smartstove" (option 1) is not listed anywhere on their website. It is for sale on am/fm energy as well as home depot though.

update - actually looked further into englanders website and did find a page where i can buy parts for it. feel a little more confident, but still curious as to why its not listed on their current offerings page. I like the imperial too but this one has a bigger hopper, and the exhaust vent is in exactly the same spot as my pdvc which would make it really easy to swap out with this new one.

All parts for Quadrafires are available OnLine that is not a problem at all! If you cannot find a good used Quad then yes, you would only have to make the initial purchase from a Dealer.

55-TRPCB120 may be a stove that is sold exclusively through a large chain store ... that's why Bioburner suggested contacting England stoves directly. It is a Timber Ridge model so who sells that badging? I think Canadian Tire here carries the Timber Ridge but not sure who else... Could be they are phasing out that model in favour of the Imperial. Best to get it from the company rep or AM/FM energy why?

AM/FM energy sell refurbished/scratch models so would have the wide range of stoves available.

so englander told me that yes the model i was looking at was discontinued, but they have a new model out which is basically the same thing. *however* its thermostat is build into the control board and you cant use it with an external thermostat. I have to think about that... the stove room is the warmest room in the house so i would have to set it higher than i'm used to so that the coolest room in the house is comfortable. looks like more research.
i might check out quadrafire now that you guys mention it, however they are a considerably higher price.

Would be interesting to see how they accomplish the on board thermostat. Harman stoves too have a built in temperature system but have a room probe that extends away from stove.

The Quad CB1200 has T-Stat screw terminals in the back of the stove. See 1st 3 pics
The Harman must have the T-Stat wired in series with one leg of the room sensing probe. See rest of the pics Harman is on the Lowes Iris WiFi T-Stat using an iPhone 6 plus

While the cb1200 seems like a good option and i might wind up doing that, I also am now looking at the englander 10-cpm. The only way i could live with the cpm is to add a hopper extension. This is what i did with my pdvc 10 years ago and its been a much better stove for it. So, does anyone own a 10-CPM and if you do, could you measure and post the hopper opening dimensions? They dont seem to make a specific extension for the 10-CPM but with the measurements i could see if there is one to fit.

the PAH is still high on my list. I did stumble across the drolet eco-65 and it looks tempting but its a behemoth at 440 lbs empty. add the pellets and im looking at almost 600 lbs. factor in that i like to keep a few bags inside during the dead of winter and I believe im pushing the weight limits of my floor.

The stove sits in the corner of the livingroom, next to a non load bearing wall and almost smack dab in the center of the joist span. It would probably be okay but i still think its pushing it.

Looking around i was like why are most of the hoppers only 40-80 lbs. Then i get on northerntool and stumble across some vogelzang stove and it lists the hopper as 25 lb capacity. so im thinking ok its a typo. nope. 25 lbs. I'd have to constantly load er up. haha - no.

then i did some more research and see some other vogelzang stoves and that its really USstove. Im not too crazy about that company. arent they the ones that put out those horrid window units a few years ago?

I should mention i hate shopping. I should just order the pah and be done with it

Don't you really Have to Have a Harman!
Here is a Harman P61a in great condition that puts out a whopping 61,000 BTUs for only $2250
The top and sides get hot like a wood stove!!
There is no better stove for this money $$

I got the hopper extension for mine and it holds 2.5 bags!

I also got the Nickel Trim Kit and the scenic tile, now I want the mirror glass for the fire door.

I never got into the harman craze. the top and sides getting hot its not a plus in my case because of its location. the pelpro's do not auto start and stop with a thermostat. thats a feature i wish i had most in my pdvc. if i want it warm in the morning i have to set it on 1 before bed and then have it hot in the morning. or i could light it when i wake up and by the time it starts to warm up i have to leave for work. a programmable stat would let me have it start at 4 am and turn off the rest of the day at 7 am. (until winter hit of course, then i'd just leave it on all the time

The Pelpro with the new Accutron IV control panel works with a t-stat

That is a manual light stove.
The auto light kit for auto startup is about $500.00
That is a fun project, I have done it at least 4 times
