First Fire...

Going to fire up the Castine for the first time tonight. It was 37 degrees overnight here in Central Massachusetts, and it's expected to be a bit colder tonight. The house was quite chilly when I woke up this morning [thanks to a basement window I left open!].

Haven't fired up the furnace yet, but I did light the small propane stove in our kitchen over the weekend for the wife.

Any other Bay Staters - or New Englanders - planning to fire up soon?

too soon for me. house is still in the mid 60s. although i did leave the bedroom window cracked until like 9pm last night and the bedroom was already down to 62.

I had a test fire a week or two ago after maintenance on the pellet stove, but I'm with ColdNH... I'm trying to hold out. House gets a ton of sun all day so it'll be warm in there when I get home tonight. Have to wait to finish my hearth downstairs otherwise tonight would probably be a good test fire/ burn the paint in on the new NC30 night! But its not ready yet :/ My house is on a pretty good hill and it was 38 there, but at my office is was 33. The office is right across the river from Bow. It is odd that the slight change in elevation at the house has often lead to warmer temps than my office in the shoulder season, but in winter I see colder temps at the house than the office..

To be honest, I'm burning tonight more out of want than need. I'm in the mood for a burn, and it's cold enough to justify it. Plus my wife is working late and it will be a nice surprise for her to walk in the door and find a fire going.

Nothing wrong with that Stegman! I know the better half was excited for the test firing as were the dogs. One of them spends his winter in front of the stoves sleeping or watching the flames.

I'm going to light up tonight too, may get down to freezing and the house was cold all morning, I work in the lower level and it doesn't really warm up til later in the day, I was working this morning with a flannel shirt and a coat, no need for that.

Funny you say that, My house is at about 800 feet, and when i looked at my digital thermometer it said 38 degrees, but when i checked weather.com app it said 33. I believe the weather.com app is closer to concord in the valley. I have noticed on colder mornings its usually a few degrees warmer at elevation.

It will be on nights when we get radiational cooling. You ever notice in the dead of winter on a cold January night with snow cover the valleys will be 20 degrees colder than the higher elevations.

Lit a few hardwood scrap cut-offs this morning 42 here. The window air conditioners let the coolness in. This burning business can wait several more weeks, I am no hurry.

Lit up the new JOTUL F45 GREENVILLE this morning. The house was 55deg. It's 85deg in the
room right now and the stove is still at 300deg. Think I am going to like this new style stove.
Just took out a F3 CB Jotul to get a longer burn.

We hit 29 degrees this morning, and had the first real fire last night (a few small half-hearted fires previously just to get the soapstone ready). We sit out in the open and tend to be a bit cooler than others in the general area.

Burning wood in the winter is a necessity, but burning wood now feels more like a luxury, and I like little luxuries when I can get them.

We've only gotten down to low 40's maybe overnight....still sleeping with the windows open, gets to around 62ish in the house overnight. To me, it's only mid september...warmer temps are still out there, and I usually try to hold off until Nov. 1 to get the stove going. No Heat till Trick or Treat!! (unlike last year when we got that freak snowstorm a couple days before halloween)

That was a crazy snow storm! I had just put new tires on the truck, might have been out working on my defensive driving in the abandoned parking lots near where i used to live.. haha It was still in the 40's this am when I woke up around 6am. Last night I was painting my downstairs in an attempt to get it all finished up before burning season and was painting the windows with them open and had to shut them. It was getting a little cool down there. Went up stairs and the better half was baking making the kitchen and living room nice and toasty. Bedroom window was open a hair last night and house was still in the mid 60's this am. Looks like the next week its going to stay pretty warm around here according to NOAA.gov. I'm alright with that, have to get my hearth done!

It was in the low to mid forties the last two nights, cloudless skies, and cool. The leaves are still on the trees so the sun does not warm the house until it gets pretty high. Woke up this morning to 62 degrees in the house. Wife made a comment about it not having been that cold all last winter. Got the hint.

Made a small fire and went to get dressed. By the time I got back out all three kids were in front of the stove reading. Why aren't you having breakfast? "It's cold in the kitchen, when the stove warms up we'll eat."

Shoulder season has started...
