I actually turned on the dehumidifier in the basement, and I'm a cheap ba$tard.
Water collecting and dripping from pipes, water pump tank, manifold, etc. And this is on the foam that I painstakingly insulated with that foam stuff and glued the joints.

dog days, saying has been around since? most meteos are calling for this to be the pinnacle of heat for summer. go figure the coldest july high ever at dallas-ft worth. 75* right now, about the same yesterday during daylight hours. reminds me of the 50's when the summers were hot as hell.

I got quiet a surprise with this humidity. Opened the stove yesterday to do a major cleaning, and low and behold some rust pitting in the burn pot. I put some damp rid in there to see if that helps.

Lil rust wont hurt anything, people you are all freaking out!!
My wife cleaned my glas few weeks ago, but all it did was show the dust crawling up the insides!!

Yea but its hotter there at night. Just came back from Cocoa beach,nighttime temps mid to high 70s here it goes lower than that and cools the house and pool somewhat. And its pretty humid there as well.

I have the dehumifyergoing a night in the finishd basement. also tw AC units runningon the first floor of our raised ranch.
the dehumdifyer over heats the basement. would running AC down there be better? the basement has only a cement wall on three sides and is only in the ground 2-3 feet at the most. one end you have to step up to enter. regular widows in those rooms. All walls are insulated.

Actually, the extra heat the dehumidifier pumps into the basement is likely an advantage. If you can heat the space, you lower the RH, and the dehum doesn't need to work so hard to lower the dew point / abs. humidity.

I've also wondered about pumping AC to the basement, but have always avoided it, due to air quality concerns.

Our we have 3 rooms and a bath finished there. Everything is insulated. my downfall is that the cement floor isn't insulated. Had we known, we woulld have had the contractor put foam board under the cement floor. I have a good ceiling ht now and don't want to build up the floor and ruin the height. What I am doing now is circulating the downstairs and upstairs air. At night, I isolate it and run the dehumidifier. I spend about half my day in the den of the basement. With normal windows and doors and ability to walk out and step down, there is no feeling of a basement except if I don't keep the dehumidifer going in really damp weather. I use to have carpets, but took those all up. They absorb odors etc and are very hard to keep clean when you have pets.

Some window units advertise they are dual purpose, cool and de-humidify. A heat pump Hot water heater does both as well.

We got a ten minute sprinkle last night. Lots of thunder but no real rain. Washed the car today and I think I had the hose on me more than the car. Was hoping if I washed it, It would rain for sure, We'll that didn't work(yet anyway)!

Been on vacation all week and what a waste. Too hot to do much but jump in the lake. Go figure they decide to weed treat it and now we can't use it for a few days! Actually paid to go to another beach just to cool off for an hour. Was supposed to go bass fishing today, But the boy decided it wasn't worth it. Last time we went out we almost got heat stroke even with lots of water and G2. Tried staying in the shade as much as we could, But there wasn't much during high noon.

Can't wait for Saturday evening(thunder storms) and Sunday is supposed to be cooler. Hopefully we'll salvage the last day of vaca with a fishing trip! Luckily still have a week and change to use at a later date! whew!

AC units are dehumidifiers they handle latent and sensible loads depending on the unit. In central air and window units the latent load is handled through condensation. Humid air passes over cold coils which condenses the humidity into water which then drains off outside. The sensible load is handled by the unit outside which blows the heat outside and keeps it from going into your home. Dehumidifiers only handle latent heat which means all the sensible heat has no way of going outside so it just goes back into the room causing it to heat up. There is a little bit more heat as well from the compressor in the dehumidifier adding to the room as well. All that blather said it is actuall better to pull the humidity out of the room if you can with a dehumidifier because the windows are sealed not letting in more. A window units huge drawback is the sides have nothing more than little plastic slides in most cases and the actually create a small vacuum due to the fans sucking in air on the front of the unit.

don't ask me to prove it now, but I remember my old college thermodynamics class....one of the exercises was trying to figure out that if a refrigerator were left open, would it cool the room, or would the electronics actually heat the room up....the answer was the latter....leaving the fridge open would actually warm the room.....interesting....

Pretty simple principle, actually. Net power loss = heat! Best you could do would be 100% efficiency = net zero.

Yup. The refrigerator removes heat from inside and dumps it into the room it is in.
