My pilot won't stay lit, and I believe it's the thermocouple. While I'm in there, I'm going to replace the thermopile as well. I stopped into a local fireplace store, and he said that there is no such thing as a generic thermocouple or thermopile, that they're brand-specific. The gas fireplace I have is made by heatilator, which they don't stock. Of course, he tried to sell me a unit they sell....

My question is, have you ever heard of this? I was under the impression that as long as the dimensions were the same, brand didn't really matter.

True value sells UNIVERSAL 750 millivolt generators (aka thermopiles). $50+.
Believe me, they work in almost ALL units.
I'd ermove your thermocouple & take it to the store.
The threads that secure it to the gas valve MUST match or it won't work,
& it has to fit diametrically in the pilot assembly opening.
