Hi every body I'm new to the forum and I'm looking at buying a pellet stove for a little extra heat in my basement I found a used Quadrafire Castile close to me so I went and took a look at it the unit is in good shape and hasn't been used very much it is currently set up in their living room they are asking 1500.00. Is this a good buy? Is there any thing that I need to check on it before I buy it? Thanks for any help, Wally

I'm looking to purchase a new Castile and have checked around on prices. They all want full msrp 2995 but quad has a $250 coupon. So it really depends on the wear of the unit you are looking at.
Hi thanks for the reply I was doing some research on these and I guess the older model Castile's had an 8 tube heat exchanger and the newer Castile's have a 10 tube heat exchanger. Is this correct? I counted 11 tubes on this one I know this unit is probably 5 or 6 years old and the parts break down shows 10 tubes on quadrafires web site so Im kind of confused on what model this exactly is it does have Quadrafire cast in to it but I didn't see where it said Castile. My Castile is dated Oct 2008 mine has10 tubes. The Castile name is on a plate on the rear of the stove.
Standard rate on used vs new pricing seems to be about 50% off, so $1500 is probably a reasonable deal, especially while still in the high demand season. If anything else was included w/ it, ie venting, hearth pad, any spare parts, that would be 'value added', IMO. It would be good to know any stove use history, ie was it dealer vs owner maintained, what parts were replaced, was it used as a primary or supplemental heat source, etc.
I inherited our Castile, (which is a 2002 model with 8 tubes), from the prior owners of our farm house, who were more of the 'set it and forget it' type when it came to maintenance, so I ended up putting some money the first burn season into parts to get it burning right, as well as in relocating it to a central room and doing a good bit of home insulation improvemnts to be able to use it as the primary vs supplemental heating source that they used it for. But it was a 'free stove' essentially, and has saved us huge on the oil costs they put into the house as prior owners, so it has more than paid me back on the investment.

Well I ended up buying the stove got it for $1200.00 and it came with the hearth pad. I got this thing unloaded this morning and was starting to clean on it and found the ID plate inside the hopper and this is not the Castile its the MT Vernon (the older version) so I was pretty excited about that! I will try to get some pics posted of it. It doesn't look like its been used very much at all every thing is very clean on it. Wally

The Quad MV's start at about $4000 retail, usually closer to 5K installed, so to get the hearth pad w/ it for $1200 is a great score. I believe the early generation pellet stoves in general are in allot of ways more reliable, considering everything now is made either in China or to Chinese standards.
If my Castile hadn't come with our farm house I would have bought the Mt Vernon - it has 30% more BTU output and double the hopper capacity of the Castile, as well as the auto-clean feature. I'd love to score a porcelain MV someday, as my Castile is a little under-sized for the living area we are heating with it.
You should get great service out of your Quad - which along w/ the Harman's seem to have a very loyal following. Like anything pre-owned, you may have a few things to dial in on it, especially if it hasn't been regularly used of recent, but there are many MV owners on this forum who can help you along the way. Congrats !!

Looks good. Even may include shipping. I always get a bang out of the claim of Quads, " patented jam free feed system" The wine world will have to go to screw tops instead of cork.
