Well, on the bright side, maybe I can stop hearing about how we beat up Santa.

There are certain areas I would not hitchhike in ... just sayin. Maybe in the next version they will equip the robot with a gun for US travel.

Philly is an old city, with well-established neighborhoods. Many great, but a few... not so much. Locals know which to avoid, but this robot's programmers failed him, in that regard.

It was programmed to hitchhike, which means the robot went wherever people took him. That was it's purpose so not a fault of the programmers, just a fault of humanity.

"The robot couldn’t move by itself, with the exception of its hitchhiking arm and finger, and was therefore dependent on the goodwill of strangers. Designed to be a talking travel companion, hitchBOT could toss out factoids and carry limited conversation. The robot would automatically snap a photo every 20 minutes to document its travels."

Always in threes.

Say goodbye to the snakepit

only in America........ traveled across Canada, Germany and the Netherlands.

Ahhh - Philly, this story reminds of something I saw a couple years back in the City of Brotherly Love. My buddies and I went to a convention and later that evening while walking back to the train station we went up a couple blocks to a bar, Inside were 5 or so people and a bar tender that looked like Mr. T, One on the patrons (Who was refered to as "The Judge" was drinking a whiskey, his leg was freshly wrapped in semi clean gauze. I asked "The Judge" what happened, he said there was a minor problem last night and someone stabbed him in the leg with a knife, I said "problem here?" he said actually right were I was sitting, then pointed at the floor and I saw the drops on dried blood on the ground. I just nodded my head.
A friend and myself went outside to have a smoke and I noticed that there was a huge cast iron flower pot (+300lbs) chained to an even heavier boulder, I laughed a little under my breath because I realized that this might be a rough area of the city.
A little later that evening Mr. T bartender asked my friends and I to be weary of the night fall, and maybe we should think about heading back to the train station by cab, not because we were drunk, but he didn't want anything to happen to us on the streets

Who is surprised by this? Every city has an area you don't go to.
The bot doesn't choose where it goes. It made made the 6000 mile journey cross Canada unscathed except for a lot of magic marker signatures on it. It had to trust in human kindness to make that journey. The story is pretty interesting. The bot has been to some very interesting places in Canada.

Ashful: Every really nice apartment over a meth lab has lots of pretty 'colourful' flowers and greenery - perhaps illegal greenery. ;);)

As a Loonie, it irks me that the hard-line US of A is ahead of us with some states where pot is perfectly legal and yet for all of our socialism, we still have a gov't that thinks possession should be a criminal offence. Perhaps that will change with the election in October.

Back to the OP. Two of the three were Canadian. Two of the three were killed by ?????????? On that note, I'll get another rum smoothy and enjoy the holiday today.

The bot had brothers? Do tell, I missed that part of the story.

Are you asking me?
"Rowdy" Roddy Piper, was a Canadian professional wrestler, film actor and podcast host. In professional wrestling, he was known for his work with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, later WWE) and World Championship Wrestling(WCW) from the mid 1980s to the late 1990s. Although he was Canadian, because of his Scottish heritage he was billed as coming from Glasgow. (wiki)

hitchBOT was a Canadian "hitchhiking robot" created by David Harris Smith of McMaster University and Frauke Zeller of Ryerson University.[1]

Ryerson was my old school. Better known as Rye High - which I always assumed was from everyone drinking Cdn rye at the same time as being high on the previously mentioned illegal green stuff. I might be wrong but that's my impression. I just saw this happen and did not participate.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Cecil was not Canadian.

Sorry Ashful, the programmers didn't fail, people did by leaving him in that section of town... It is a social experiment on several levels.

Edit: RIP Robin Williams ... mental health still an area in need of research and creativity. RIP Oliver Sacks who Robin Williams portrayed in "Awakenings"

we still have a gov't that thinks possession should be a criminal offence
I'll stay out of that part of the debate but this ticks me off ... http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmon...uana-treatment-that-quells-seizures-1.3206610 Instead of working with the Mom and doctors on this (case history) in the best interests of this child, Alberta Child and Family services wants to load this girl up with prescription meds that don't do the job:mad: They did drop the suit but just added to the stress for this family ... they have enough to deal with.
