How much smoke in the house when the power goes off ??? 1-10

Who here has experienced this. I have not set up an OAK yet but the thought of this is going to make me do it in the next day or so. How bad does it get. In shut down mode my stove dies in 2-3 minutes but with no combustion blower in the mix running i could see it smoldering for a good bit ??

I have no Outside Air Kit, but my exhaust vent has a ten foot vertical rise of 3" vet pipe to the cap. I get no smoke inside the house when the power goes out.

I am just a temp. install for this season then moving to our other home and selling this place I hope. so I am straight out thru an window filler I built for the thimble, then turned up with a 90 and a rain cap. Works well running but gonna suck if the power goes out I am afraid. I got a couple honda 2000's here but I am not always home. We had a flicker today while I was gone but the stove was off. I'm asking for it. Gotta work on this !!

How much smoke can get in with an OAK setup. I am thinking only through the igniter intake vent hole ??

I have mine piped into the chimney and I have lost power and the natural draft actually cept the stove burning slowly for a few min and 0 smoke in the house

My main stove is in the basement and vents vertically 25ft - not a whisper of smoke leaking out even from a full on flame during a power outage. I have a smaller pellet stove on the other hand which helps heat a small addition, it is direct vented just a few feet out the wall, this baby smokes like a dragon when the power goes out - I usually have to scrape the burn pot quick and remove the ash tray and out the sliding glass door it goes.

I have no vertical rise in my vent so I set up a modified APC to keep the stove running during a power failure.

I have vertical rise and I get smoke in the house. Mine smoldered for almost an hour, until I connected my generator, and it re ignited by just the combustion blower coming on..

Put it on a UPS. some inexpensive ones work great just to allow it to burn out in the event your not home.

I had a power outage on Saturday for 15-20 minutes. I had already shut down the Harman in the basement to get ready for cleaning (it has plenty of rise and OAK, so don't expect there would be an issue), but had the St. Croix going on the main floor. I have about a 1' rise then vertical vented with OAK hook up. I got a couple of light puffs of smoke out the door, but that was it. It will smolder quite a while without the fan going forcing combustion air. Might be a little better with OAK, but I don't know that for a fact.

I don't understand, just because it is on a UPS and the power goes out..... if your not home it will keep going for a while I could see but it seems then it would just loose power and it would be the same as a power outage ? Are you just powering your combustion blowers with the UPS or ? Are you assuming it would last long enough to get home before it shuts down, what am I missing. ?

I added external batteries to my APC to extend the runtime. I'm currently at about 8 hours but soon, I plan to add more batteries to extend the run time to 24 hours. The theory is that the hopper will run out of pellets and shut the stove off before the batteries die.

Ok I see !! I could get by well with 10 hours, I live close to work and almost always go home at lunch but if I did not 10 hours would cover me. I need to look for an old used one with bad batteries.

Lets see the Harman is on UPS but has over 8 foot of vertical so natural keeps the smoke out naturally. The Bixby has 6 foot of vertical no problem and the Elena has no vertical with a straight out venting has no issues because the stove is just designed differently. Really want the Harman and Bixby to have a natural draft as burning corn can really stink quick. One more UPS to get to cover all stoves.

yes you are correct...no power the ups just cycles the combustion blower on and off to shut it down safe with no smoke..i have 0 vertical rise straight out the wall and pointed downward and i get no smoke with the ups..

I think I am understanding your Harman stove is designed to work with an USP to do this as opposed to my cheapo stove is not so I have to be able to run it out of pellets. Almost seems I could just always just run my combustion blower off the UPS instead of the stove, it runs one speed all the time anyway.

I bought my APC to allow me to run my stove for extended period in a power failure. I like being able to shut off the noisy generator at night and still keep warm. Keeping smoke out until the generator can be fired up is a side benefit.
