Got a truck load of this wood from one of the fellow soccer parents. He cut a tree down last week and asked me if I would help him cut it up and stack it. He also burns wood occasional but it was too much work for him so I went over and in exchange he gave me a truck load. He is not sure what kind of tree it is neither do I. I want to say red oak but I'm just going by some old leaves in his yard that are oak leaves.

now that I am on my computer and looking at it closer, I am 100% certain that I screwed up! That is a norway maple, good eye Gzecc. The end grain doesn't have distinctive rings in it that an ash would. Plus the dark center heartwood......I say norway maple, final answer...... A split or two would seal the deal...

If its not ash and thinking it may be to white for ash. I would go with tulip poplar.

There is no "give away" for maple. It just resembles norway maples. They all look a little different depending on age, growing condition, competition, lighting, etc........

The darker brown heartwood "center", plus the flush-cut flat side is too yellowish-color for Ash. Ash when cut is more of a whitish color....

I definitely agree with maple! I turn oodles of it on my lathe! That ambrosia heartwood is a giveaway.

Creo que esta arbol esta el Maple de Norway. Most of the large Norway Maple shade trees I have seen have the same dark center, plus Norway Maple has bark confusingly similar to White Ash, which explains the dual identification you're getting. The bark, not-quite -white wood, dark center, and I guess also the absence of a distinctive sapwood layer are what lead me to say Norway Maple. The end grain also makes me think maple, but I am not sure exactly what about the end grain makes me say that.

Bark does not look like Norway Maple to me. Too thick. Looks like Ash bark. Yea split one open and we will be able to see......

I do the same even bet on it. After cutting the trunk red started showing up. (Boxelder)

Ah, the fabled "Mash" trees . . . I've cut them down before as well . . . thought they were an ash until I got them down and discovered maple leaves growing on my "ash" tree.
