So, I heard from a not reliable source that Pennington's Nature's Heat pellets were from the same plant as energex pellets (at least the ones sold in Maine). All I have ever burned since buying my stove is energex and I pay $5 a bag.. today with a buddy at Sam's club I see a mountain of these Pennington bags for $4.05 each.. and I bought one to try. If all went well I would but a membership and save $$$$$!@#!! exciting!!

Opened the bag and was pretty instantly disappointed by how small the pellets are...

The looked like the bottom of my energex bags.. pictured below:

But worse...

Dumped it into the stove on top of a few remaining inches of the Energex pellets and again more disappointment was bought on by the amount of saw dust in the bag...

So, now I play the wait game as there were a few hours of Energex left before we hit the good stuff... any bets on how these burn?? My glass is clear right now.. just cleaned the stove really good and burned 1/2 bag of energex before these start to kick in..

Let us know how it goes, that is a really good price. I have 3 or 4 brands available to me here, all just over $4 each. I smelled them all, put them all into water to dissolve and burned at least 4 bags of each. The one that smelled the freshest of cut wood did the best, ie; burned the hottest.. So, I am currently a fan of the smell test. The one I wanted to buy was local to my state, was smaller, darker in color, but did not burn near as hot, and possible made more ash. The cheapest turned out to be the hottest ($4.19) setting for setting. Marth, "Super" Premium. How hot? Well, it got up to 87 degrees in the stove room, the stove was off-gassing paint fumes and people started to leave the room..... lol!

And, that was on the lowest high setting...

[Hearth.com] Im in for a treat! Pennington Pellets Sure are better looking pellets than I tried a couple seasons ago.

Best of luck to you with the Penningtons. I attempted to burn them last year. It didn't work out well for me.

I don't remeber Penningtons being great let alone good, high ash, low heat.

Well.. compared to Energex, this bag of Pennington burned a lot hotter, the flame was steady and hotter looking colorwise.. no clump developed in the burn pot.. ash was about the same for a bag of energex.

BUT, on low I usually get 26 hours on a bag.. this bag I got 20 hours.. so there i the extra heat.. but at a $1 a bg less I am happy... maybe Ill try a few more before I go and buy a ton and see if they are consistet. Im trying TSC brand bag tonight.. it was $4.18.

It may be a buck cheaper, but at only 20 hours compared to 26, you'll be burning an extra 2 bags a week.

At the end of last years heating season I had no choice but to go to walmart and buy some Penningtons as everyone else was out . I was pleased that they were burning quite well. 2 yrs previous I tried them and they were garbage. So just out of curiosity I purchased a couple bags this year to give em a try as I know they were a new batch and not last years leftovers. I found that they also were throwing some heat. One thing I learned on this site is not to take anyone elses experiences to heart because every stove burns differently and one brand of pellet may burn lousy from one Batch and just the opposite from another. If I were happy with a pellet and burned 2 more bags a week I would be able to live with that. It all depends on what is available in your area , what works best for you and what you can afford.

I burned Pennington back in 08 in my St.Criox Afton Bay. They were hot, reasonable ash...BUT, so many fines, like a cup or more in each bag. Had to sift every bag...no thanks. If they got their fines under control, I would try em again.

I tried a few bags this year they are still ashy but better heat than past years, they are $5 a bag though, I can get loose bags of hamer's for that price.
