We want to install a wood burning insert in our small ground-floor fireplace. It's been blocked off for years, but we think it previously had a propane heater. The opening is 24" wide, 16" deep, and 27.5" high. We want an insert that projects into the room. All that I've found that will fit are Buck model 21 and Lopi Answer inserts. How do these stoves compare? If the existing masonry chimney is a straight run except for the connection end, would a solid stainless liner be preferable to flexible?

Not as familiar with Buck stoves as I am LOPI, but both have good reps. The Answer is a smaller 4-6 hour burner, but has been around a long time. solid heater.

Is it a pre fab fireplace or masonry? Pics would help.

It's masonry. Blocked off at the bottom, probably at top too.

24" width is very limiting for an insert. Would it be possible to remove some bricks at the opening to make the width more workable? Or maybe consider a FS stove in front of opening (although then height of input to liner shown may be difficult..) Good luck.

Lol. I would be fine with free-standing, but my wife says no. Perhaps I could install the small Buck or Lopi partially in the hole but without the decorative face-plate.

Ooh boy, if she says a no-go on the freestander, can't imagine she'd be happy with an insert not installed fully with its surround. My wife still doesn't like our Jotul gas stove on our hearth in the living room fireplace- I keep thinking I'll built a custom surround piece to close off the opening, but has not happened yet... Good luck.

The Lopi Answer is a good heater. It's been around for a long time.

It looks like a PE Vista could slip in there with just a slight grinding of the bricks.
