Is it normal for pellet stove to draw air through a door gasket?

Is it normal for pellet stove to draw air through gasket that is on the door with it closed? My stove calls for a flat type 5/8" gasket but the only type I could get is a round 5/8" rope and it sucks flame through that rope. I lit a piece of paper towel and place it near the gasket to test it. Didn't suck a lot though.

Does it matter if a stove draws air through the gasket and will the stove burn more pellets with air leaks? Thanks!!

The door should not let air pass or smoke / fumes out from the stove.

Get that fixed asap ...... if there is a way to adjust the door to close tighter, please do it.

It is a bayview by Danson or Glowboy and the door is as tight as possible. Thanks for the help. Randy!!

If you have a local hardware store like AceHardware, they carry the gasket ropes on reels and you can cut it to length that you need.

I purchased a gasket but all I can get here is round but need the flat as I think it will have more surface area for a tighter fit. The round has only a small area to make contact. I have a piece of flat 1/8" so was thinking of glueing it to the stove so the other round I just installed will take against that to make a tighter fit? I am from Canada so no Acehardware only homehardware.

I think your 'flat' gasket started out as a round gasket and was squished.

You are gonna get a little leakage through the gasket itself but not much. I get a tad myself on my stove and always have it's not much and the negative draft/vacuum in the firebox handily overcomes the minute leakage.

If you are really paranoid about the gasket, pull the door, rip out the old one, carefully clean the channel of gasket cement and old gasket, cut the new one to length, making sure the ends meet snugly and flush, apply a liberal amount of gasket cement in the channel and lay in the new gasket. be sure you don't stretch it at all, just carefully lay it in the cement then lay a board over it and put some weight on the board and let it sit for a day to harden up. Replace the doos on the stove and be sure the latch closes with resistance and the door is tight. if not, bend or adjust the latch accordingly.

I know my St. Croix has a weird size gasket and I had to get the correct one on-line. No hardware stores (large or small) carried one big enough. I did get away with a slightly smaller gasket for a little while, but you should do the dollar bill test if you choose to use a gasket that is not the type required by the manufacturer. If the dollar bill slips out easily, then I wouldn't use it.

How old is the stove?
Is it still under warranty?

A lot of stoves have a area with no gasket on one edge of the stove. This is designed in as a air wash to help keep the glass clean longer.

No. You can carefully fluff the gasket with a wire brush.

if you don't have a users manual, they can most often be found with a simple google. pdf form, but you can read page by page straight off the PC.
