Jotul 602B missing parts

I am refurbishing a Jotul 602B. When all the plates go in they leave a gap in the back between the Back plate and the Bottom Burn plate (ref photos). Is there supposed to be brick or something in here? Seems like a place where ash and clinkers would accumulate
