Just added 2 used saws, Stihl MS250 and MS170

Had a little trouble with my 017 last week plus I thought I should probably start looking for a larger saw. Went to a pawn shop and found this MS250. Ended up getting it for $130 and he had this MS170 which supposedly wasn't running so ended up taking that too for another $70.

2 tanks of fuel through the 250 and 1 through the 170. Went from one saw to three overnight lol.

Nice score. If you want a carb for MS 170 REAL cheap - search "STIHL Chainsaw Carburetor" on ebay. I've gotten 4 of them (from $2.50-$5.50 in auction format, free shipping). I've put them on trimmers and 2 cycle edgers. Cheaper than a gasket and diaphragm kit. No data on longevity, tho.

I hate to say it, but the MS170 is my most often used saw. It's good and lightweight, great for limbing and trimming along our trails. Although I have bigger and better saws, the 170 is the first choice unless I'm cutting serious wood.

I have a 250 as my do-all saw......love it! Never skips a beat. Love it so much I gave my dad a 170 this past father's day to replace his Husky. He loves the 170 too. Great saws.

Yes, all I had here for the last 15 years was the 017, which was great for anything I had to do but I wasn't burning wood then. It is a bit small now when I'm trying to get ahead with wood.
The 250 is definitely much different than what I'm used too. Much faster but still a light saw as well. Seemed like a good deal, I was probably there for an hour taking plugs out and pulling mufflers off to try and minimize my risk, the guy didn't seem to mind.

Nice score. I have also pulled off the difficult " double pinch maneuver." How did you get the 170 to run? Or was the pawn guy mistaken?

He was mistaken. I guess someone had bought it and brought it back because it wasn't running and he never had a chance to look at it yet. It started up in 3 or 4 pulls but was smoking a lot and muffler was quite oily and dirty. Seemed more like a 20:1 mixture or something. I dumped the gas, put mine in and went and cut some wood. Ran great.
