Just bought my first wood furnace!

Well I did it. I finally found a wood burning furnace to heat my upcoming 30 x 40 pole barn. This forum helped me out in my decision so much. Thank you all! I found a Northwood Heater built by Chippewa Welding on craigslist for $175. It is in excellent condition compared to so many others I've found for sale this cheap. I plan on replacing the fire brick and all the gaskets. Once my building is completed I will find myself researching the chimney construction....I understand it is expensive! Thanks again to everyone on this site....you helped me out and didn't know it....I will post pics soon

I spent hours searching the web for info on this furnace before I bought it. Could not find much info about it at all. I did find out Chippewa Welding applied for a trademark for the Northwood Heater in 1982. As far as parts etc....nothing. I'm not planning on using it with a thermostat or automatic damper, as the control for the damper on the front does not work. I'm only using this to heat my garage while I'm there. I can install a manual on off blower switch and operate the front damper manually as well. I do have all the electronics with it, but I figure if I could find the parts they would be expensive anyways.

Chimney research should be done before the build and the building of it should be part of the construction phase.

Thanks maple1. Yes I am having the chimney flashing installed on the roof as it is being built. Much easier to replace in the future if need be when it is done during construction. Especially on a metal roof.

Finally had some time to clean up and paint the new furnace. Added new fire bricks and door gaskets. Bought it for $175, have about $50 in it. (not including the chimney pipe of course!)

I still havent found much information about these Northwood Heater wood furnaces. No big deal....hoping to fire it up soon!

Looking pretty good, at least.

I see now that it is a wood/coal unit. Sometimes those combo units end up being not real good at either and a big compromise, but it should be able to throw some heat anyway. Might take a few fires to figure out how to get the most out of it.

I wonder if your furnace might be an older Energy King. Made in WI, coal wood combo, looks similar. I was considering one for our house a couple of years ago but went with the PSG Caddy instead. I think that was before they were bought out by Royal.

How do you like it? Looking at one the same brand used on marketplace but it’s a little bigger
