I've been burning with a Quadrafire 7100FP for past 13 years.... It was a nice setup compared to my previous burners.. We're moving to a new place that allows me to burn wood in the basement. I bought a top vent- Fisher Grandpa Bear,... the biggest one right? The Quadrafire had amazing abilities with choosing where air came from and where to send it. But I'm back to a regular ol' wood stove now and had a couple questions as it has been a while. Should I use a pipe damper, or are the air vents enough to control things?? Also I'm very intrigued about adding a baffle inside the stove. I burned wood in old stoves before the Quadrafire, so that was the first time I had seen a baffle in action and it made me a believer. I've been searching around and haven't seen any baffle installation info specifically for the Grandpa Bear out there. . Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I'll get some pics up soon.

If you have the spark screen for fire viewing with doors open, a flue damper is required in Fireplace Mode.
The flue damper is a chimney control for over drafting chimney. Normal draft and good sealing doors does not require flue damper when controllable with air dampers only.
The baffle depends on chimney. It is advised to add one. The width of that model should use 5/16 thickness steel plate. The opening exhaust passes through cannot be smaller than stove outlet. Setting on rear brick retainers, angle front upward to lower bend.
Make a cardboard template to set in place for measuring square inch opening for exhaust travel.

I'm not a sketch artist... haha.. when you say "The opening exhaust passes through cannot be smaller than stove outlet." Am I right in saying on my diagram opening 'A' cannot be smaller than 'B'?? And the preferred placement is to angle it upwards like that?

Yes. The same size opening is the minimum. Depending on chimney type, flue diameter, and flue insulation, the opening needs to be larger to allow more heat up the flue when flue gases are allowed to expand into a larger area. The minimum opening would be for a straight up insulated flue. Many other factors such as pipe configuration and cooling as exhaust gases rise determines how much heat is required to be left up the stack.
Bottom line is the venting system must remain above 250f to the top while smoke is present to prevent creosote formation.
