Liner to insert appliance connector question

From what I can determine, the appliance connector connects the chimney liner to the fireplace insert. Does the liner go inside one end of the connector or on the outside of the connector. Does the other end of the connector go on the inside or outside of the fireplace insert opening?

The liner fits into the appliance connector and the connector fits into the flue collar on the insert.

Should both the connections to the liner and stove be sealed with some Mil-Pack Black? How does that stuff work?
