Squirrels are cool. Pound for pound they have to be some of the strongest critters out there. Could you sprint up a vertical plane only holding on with your fingers and toes?

That's a great picture zap. Those squirrels sure are cute critters, but ornery as all getout. Sometimes a downright PITA.

They are always hungry...ha I have four at a time somedays. Yes, its corn chops...use that to keep them from eating all of my sunflower seeds.

After we have the fireplace in we have some quaking aspen down that I'll take care of then it's up in the bowl for this cherry.

Thanks Dex, yes that cherry should be some nice wood. It would be nice if I could save some for milling, it will be nice if it is good wood in the middle.

Most around here are quite tame, I can get within a couple feet before they scamper off.Ones in rural areas like at friend's or family member's places are much more nervous,what with hawks,owls,dogs all about,not to mention hunting season from early September to late January for Fox & Gray's.Any stale/leftover bread,pizza crust,tortillas,popcorn,apple peels,carrot tops etc are set out under the swing or on picnic table.Between the birds,squirrels,rabbits, & the occasional opossum & raccoon at night they dont last long.

Early June, in backyard robbing a small green Pear.100 degree afternoon resting on limestone bench.

There are all kinds of rats out here including little (squirrel), medium (raccoons) and large (deer).

Fortunately the squirrel population locally is not large. About 3 years ago a few grey squirrels showed up. They are not welcome as they put pressure on the smaller and rarer Douglas squirrel. I stopped putting sunflower seeds in the big feeder and they haven't shown up since. But I suspect they will be back in a couple months when the filberts are ripe.

Are they considered invasive there begreen? I spent a month in Mukillteo but don't remember squirrels. They are a pest in parts of Europe

I know pics or it didn't happen but a couple weeks ago I saw a squirrel with a cigarette butt hangin out of its mouth. Really sad, then it started eating it. I cant imagine why it would do that.

We have a black squirrel they drives me crazy ! That little bugger likes to sit on top of the chimney in the winter I can't figure out how he has not got cooked yet Two winters now he will climb up there and sit for a couple minutes then scamper off and leave lines up the roof through the snow. In the summer the snot will tip all the feeders and then eat up all the seed off the ground.

It is illegal to hunt the red squirrels here. I think they are called douglas squirrels as BG points out. The big grey squirrels are all over the place in urban areas and are more like rats. Maybe illegal to kill but yuck, urban diets like the rodents that they are.

I've been busted by many of the red squirrels deep in the forest while trying to hunt deer. Those buggers will start chattering at you like crazy. I maybe knew a guy who has blasted more than one with a shot from the deer rifle. A very decisive victory.
