There was an electric car symposium held in Redmond, WA at Microsoft a few months back. Key players from the automotive and power industries were brought together to see and discuss the latest technologies. They then met to explore the future impacts and possibilities. Because there is a large hydro component in our state, the most exciting proposal is to wean our cars off of gas and towards electricity. This idea is gaining traction. It may seem like a net loss, but not if the cars are used to return power to the grid.
