My husband has always wanted a Macaw but 1- we lack the floor space for a big cage 2 - the dogs won't like it 3- they scare the heck out of me

So....we agreed on a Hahn's Macaw, the smallest of the Macaw family. We put a deposit on him as an egg from a breeder/store owner in north NJ. We just picked him up yesterday!

We were going to name him "Solo" (another dorky Star Wars reference from me, sorry) but I think we will be naming him "Loki" after the Nordic God that was a joker and never shut up...which appears to suit him well.

They live 20 years so with me working from home, I'm sure he will have QUITE the vocabulary soon ;)

Anyone else have pet birds?

have a cockatiel, "lolly" her previous owner had her (was one of my wife's co workers) but after her mom passed her dad moved in with her and he was allergic so they couldn't keep her. so we adopted her ,and she's been living up my chat sessions ever since, she's sitting on my CPU right now, when i sign off i tell her, lets go home, and she hops right up in her cage and settles in.she's been here 7 years now
 
That is too cute, birds can be funny little pets.

We have a cockatiel too a friend had to give up. He's been here almost 10 years now, whistles, sneezes and falls off his swing when he falls asleep on it but doesn't like to be handled too much. Likes the shower but that's about it. He spits seeds at the dogs, it's pretty funny to watch. The dog will be sound asleep curled up in the sunny doorway like a cat would and they get woken up being pelted with seeds, bouncing off their heads.

My friend has one too, he's had him almost 18 years now. His cage is in the computer room in their condo and years ago learned to mimic the fax modem noise, it's really funny when he still does it. He also does a "tink, tink, tink" sound of my friend stirring his coffee in the morning. Cracks me up!
 
I dont remember the type of bird but he looked almost like yours ! We had him when we where little he would fly around and say "Give me a smoke ! Give me a smoke !" Thanks Grandpa !

my sister, and my father in law are big bird people. the birds mentioned in here i'm ok with, but birds aren't really my cup of tea. quakers and yellow naped amazons seem to have more individuals that are little pieces of crap. my sister has had 2, and my fil has had 2 quakers, and half of them were just awful. the one my sister still has will lean off his cage to bite whatever passes by. for a while it would talk to/lure their yorkshire terrier to it's cage and poop on it when he got underneath. the only person that can safely handle it is my sister. the one she had before was an awesome bird, but if you had a bump, or some kind of imperfection in your skin... he'd take care of it. one of the 2 my fil has is just loud and obnoxious. he's had yellow naped amazons, and one of them is so obnoxious that you can't watch tv, or read in the house. when i first started dating my wife, she told me how her grandma was sick. the first couple of dates, i didn't go past their kitchen when picking her up, and i kept hearing "OH MY GOD!" and "Damnit lauren." i was like "man, how sick is she???" macaws seem to be pretty consistent, and in my limited experience with red lories they seem pretty decent.
 
Wife had a pet bird growing up that she loved . . . she would love to have another one . . . but with six cats in the house we're thinking the poor bird would die of a heart attack if not an outright attack.
 
Congrats on the new bird... A friend of mines mother loved birds and kept several. My favorite was a large African Grey Parrot. It was
super intelligent and would say all kinds of things. Used to call you from the other room to come and say Hi. I used to laugh at it when
it would call the dog by name and tell the dog to 'get the ball, get the ball' and the bird would laugh when the dog would run around looking
for the ball that wasn't there... It would also say 'birds don't bite' right before nailing you...ha
 
We had a blue and gold when I was a kid.
That one died, and mom got another which also died too soon.
I think it was the diet she had 'em on, cause neither lasted the 70-ish years they're supposed to live. Maybe 25 or so.

My perfect dusky pionus. A 45 year old dyh amazon "El Tigre" (See above post). And a 25 year old African Grey who has an incredible, very appropriate library of words, phrases, and sounds. It's hard to raise a teenager under that kind of scrutiny.

Hahns are wonderful!

Glad to know there are bird folks here! My aunt has an african grey and amazon, both 22 going on 23. They are really the only birds I've ever been around and are like no others as my aunt has MS and has spent her days training and caring for them (as well as breeding rhodesian ridgebacks) the african grey, Becky is a female and rules the roost. She laughs, coughs, sneezes exactly like my aunt and yells "go chit in your hat George" George being her husband, my uncle, really funny. The Amazon, Mr. Beasley repeats pretty much everything, he even mimics the sound of my uncle clearing his throat. He calls the dogs too, they tolerate him but given the chance, they'd eat him for sure.

This little Hahns is hysterical. He is getting use to his perches and food bowls. We had to put the food and water on the floor of the cage because he hasn't gotten his balance yet and kept falling in the bowls trying to lean over to eat and drink, I felt really bad.

This is our first "exotic" bird so it's an adventure ;)
 
I am the only quack in my house.

Ps. I dont sell insurance either.
