they can be bought for zone valves or pumps, can be used with or without end switches, customizable
control settings and schedules, outdoor temp. compensation(reset),allows outdoor temp to be displayed on all therm.stats,
they can control up to 4 different zones
some features-boiler short cycling protection
post boiler purge
freeze protection
pump/valve exercise
domestic hot water priority(override)protection
automated test feature for quick start up and simple troubleshooting
integral domestic hot water management
Easy expansion to up to 16 zones with additional controlers
Not saying I know what this all means but its an Aquatrol AQ2000 series by Honeywell if anybody is interested
and like on the pic the price is 173.00 it seems reasonable for the simplicity

I think some of the features may be useful, but some may not be appropriate for a wood fired boiler, especially a gasifier. From the website:

"The Honeywell Aquatrol AQ2000 Series Hydronic Controls help to maximize boiler efficiency in multiple ways. It includes technology called "Outdoor Temperature Compensation" which varies the boiler temperature by compensating for outdoor temperature changes during milder seasons. The Aquatrol AQ2000 also synchronizes the different heating zones in your house to minimize frequent boiler cycling. Zones operate in tandem delivering just enough heat to each zone as needed. These two features can save approximately 15% a year on energy costs, and decrease wear and tear on your boiler."

Everything I have read and learned is that a gasifier is most efficient when burning full out, and that the best way so far to achieve that when heat demand is not sufficient to take the output is to have storage. Compensation for outdoor temperature changes would not appear to be beneficial. Some of the other features appear to be useful, depending on how sophisticated your zone systems need to be.
