New Selkirk Chimney Install Question

Hello all i recently moved my woodstove from basement to the upper level of my home and had a new selkirk chimney installed.
Looks like installers over tightened the support band before lowering into the cathedral ceiling box.This caused some minor denting of the outer casing of the chimney length.Inspector is coming next week is something i need to be concerned with?I will try to attach a picture.Thanks for any advice

Looks like a hack. Normally the chimney pipe does not protrude into the room or need a bead of silicone to seal it. Is it possible to get some roof side photos too that show how it has been installed, flashed, and storm collar sealed?

Thank you for replying and trying to help me.This is chimney system model is Sentinal made by selkirk.It will be the last time i purchase this model it appears cheaply made.
Due to the design the insulated chimney must protrude below the ceiling box minimum of 4"
Due to the depth of the support box extending into the living space the manual states we needed 10" of insulated chimney below.
The chimney itself i believe is installed to the manufactures specs(they didnt shingle over the flashing as my roof is being re shingled next week)I will get more pics.

Agreed with above, that’s a hack install. The chrome pipe shouldn’t go through the box. Here’s a picture from when I installed my Selkirk system. This is slightly different ceiling box, but shows how the double wall stove pipe termites in the box, then conveys to chrome chimney pipe.

I see how you got there, but still doesn’t look right. How did the support band inside attached to the chimney pipe?


To answer your original query, the dents don’t impact function, there’s just fiberglass inside, between the pipes.

Thank you for reply.I know it doesnt look like a coventional install but its installed as per the manual from what i can tell.

So the support band is compression fit,carriage bolts tightened,then 8 small stainless screws thru the band and into the outer layer of the chimney.That is all that supports the chimney up to 15'

Regretting buying this model :/

Only the bottom edge should show and not be sealed. OP - that really sucks this system.
I have been posting lately on another upcoming install, and the ceiling box is a termination
not a pass through with that piping.

Agree this Selkirk system is poor.
Im having my roof reshingled next week that is why the flashing is exposed atm i told them not to bother

It looks like a pretty easy fix for a roofer, or handy man, but agreed. That’s going to leak in a few years.

Probably worth getting a better pass through kit when it’s repaired. The style I posted above used to be cheap (Lowe’s had a whole kit for less than the roof flashing), but unfortunately it wount work with the sloped roofs.

Note that Selkirk and Supervent (Lowe’s) are the same brand and interchangeable.

Thanks. I haven't seen a CF Sentinel install in years. I think it's Canada only.

I made a mistake purchasing the cf model.It is cheap design compared to other selkirk models.
Do you mind sharing your thoughts on the deflection of outer chimney where the support band appears to be over thightened?
I have a wett inspection this week hoping the minor denting will still pass otherwise the entire chimney has to come out again this project has been a nightmare.

It depends on the inspector. If the inspector is a stickler for details, then he/she may fail the install for the deflection, referring back to the manual which specifically says don't overtighten the support band. The reasoning being that the deflection will slightly compress the insulation thus potentially decreasing the clearance rating in that area.

Well i just finished placing the stove and did the inside piping.Inspection tomorrow

Looks good, good luck with the inspection!

I’d paint that chrome with hi-temp flat black spray paint after it passes… that chrome would drive me nuts.

It's looks like a good setup. Watch those curtains. I think they had a valid idea when they decided to run the double wall right through the ceiling box. At least it is strong and won't leak. You might look at getting some trim to cover the RTV after inspection.

OK, Good luck ! Lets see a fire pic tomorrow. We were at 18C today after a cold front came through. Had the pellet stove going the first time since July I think
