My older P61 is turning itself up or down without giving it any input. I turned it from 3 to 2 and the temperature went up. Later that day it had turned itself virtually off from the same setting of 2. Has any one experienced this. I was told it's normal by a technician.

In stove mode, the dial should represent the exhaust temperature as measured by the ESP. It would only be indirectly related to the room temperature which would be determined from the outdoor temperature, insulation ect. Now, if you have it on two, stove mode, then that might be calling for 450F (inside the stove)and the flame should be pretty high. If it can't get that temperature by feeding more pellets and turning up the combustion air, then it is not getting enough fuel or air. How long till the heat pump :)

You could try to spray the 3 dials on the circuit board with Deoxit and work them back and forth. If that doesnt help, I would try a new ESP probe. And if that doesn't change your problem you most likely looking at a new circuit board.

We can throw out all the guesses we want, but unless we know what your setting are (a picture of control panel would be great), then we actually may not be steering you in the correct direction or to the correct conclusion. In answer to the question, "Is this normal behavior?" There are several settings and modes that would result in behavior such as you describe - sometimes that behavior would be normal, other times the behavior would be unexpected because of outside influences.

I'll assume the "rate" of 3 and 2 is the feed rate. Is it in stove mode or room temp mode? If stove mode, then it will react according to what the ESP senses for the exhaust temperature and turn the feed rate up or down to keep the exhaust temp steady. When the exhaust temp is hot enough, it may go down to a feed rate that will just keep the flame going (a maintenance flame).

During warmer days (such as my area has been experiencing lately), especially if the wind is calm, the house will retain more heat, so any additional heat output will heat up the room/house. My stoves are on an external thermostat and in room temp mode (auto). The last few days, with outside temps in the 40s F they only run occasionally during the day. If I were using stove temp, then the house would be heating up even if the stove were just in maintenance mode.

It's in stove mode. And that's the settings on the dial(Temp) not the feed rate. Feed rate is on 3.

The board's a new improved board, maybe a year old.

It's estimated to be Feb 23.

Here's more. I've since turned it down to 1, so no pictures. The temp control works fine. I've had it all the way from 6 to 1 and it has responded properly. This happened after it sitting in the same same setting for 12 hours or so. 3 was over night and 2 was from the early morning to mid afternoon. It appeared as if it went into a idle mode the second time, barely any flame. First time it appeared to be in a idle mode, but on 3. Not dead idle but reduced.

And question, can someoneconfirm that each number on the dial represents an ESP temperature? Like 1 is 400f, 2 is 450f etc? And should I be able to measure that at the front of the stove either on the door or coming out of the vent? My mechanic has a temperature gun I'm sure I can borrow.
