Pennington Oak (new style bag) at HD - worth a try?

I went to the local HD (Windham, ME) and bought a ton of Pennington Wood Pellet Fuel "Oak" for $188 (after 10% off coupon). The sales rep there said she hadn't heard of any complaints. I paid for the pellets and went home. I did a search here and there's some pretty awful reviews of the Pennington brand. I currently burn Fireside Ultra's and love them, but HD doesn't offer them right now. I used to burn Okies but they started making the auger squeak in my P38! Switched to the Fireside Ultra's and really love the ash / heat / price ratio. :)

Has anyone tried this revision of pellet? Or is is just a revision of the bag so people will buy them?

The Pennington "oak" arent new but have been around for a while. They are made in Greenfield MO and are a decent pellet. Most of the Hearth shops in Oklahoma missouri area carry them. They aren't equal to the Pennington you buy at walmart.
 
Pellets made from Oak are generally a good bet. I have read a couple of posts where they were well liked. I'd at least try a couple of bags. Please post whether you like them or not.
 
I bought some of them a couple years ago from a woman selling her stove. I burned about 5 bags, and they burned great.
 
Saved! Went to get my money back and just try a few bags and the girl said they had Fireside Ultras for the same money. Done deal. Going back tomorrow to pick them up. Said they only had 9 tons left.

Really? Full disclosure I've never met a pellet I didn't like, and I have never burnt Pennies Oak, but the regular Wally world Pennies burn noticeably better than Fireside Ultra in my P61.

Have you tried Inferno's or Nations Choice? How about some ACP's or First season MWP. TreeCycle and Lake Region would be some others if they were still here.
 
At $188 out the door, I'll take Fireside Ultra's hands down. I've only burned Okies and then went to Fireside Ultra's. They're two-thirds the cost of Okies and I'm fine with their ash content given the heat they push out. I set my stove on 3 tops and it warms my house to 75 pretty quickly with my p38. I have a typical Cape and it's installed on the first floor and blows down the center of the house.
The Okies are $299 a ton (http://www.woodpellets4me.com/pellets-okanagan.html) which is way too much IMO. The reason for a pellet stove (for me) was to take the bite out of my oil heating season. It costs just over half as much to run the pellet stove vs the oil furnace.

Oh yeah, I picked up a couple of "Change of Address" packets from the local Post Office. In those packets are Lowe's 10% off coupons - which HD will honor. That's how I got the $188 price.
 
I have burned both the Oak and the Natures Heat. I did not have a problem with either. The only difference I noticed was that the "Oak" had more ash than the "Natures Heat". Both varieties had less clinkers than the Hamer Hot Ones I burned. I would buy either variety.

Since my stove is an insert, my ash pan is smaller so less ash is better for me!

I still have not met a pellet I would not buy. For me, the only three criteria are (1) PFI Premium grade, (2) made in the USA, and (3) CHEAP!
