Hi, I am new to the site and to wood burning. I have built a corner hearth with proper clearances according to the manufacturer's specs. I have not added a mantle yet and i would like to use wood. I am reusing s/s 8 inch pipe with a 11.25'' galv. sleeve over it as a heat shield. I don't know if you can call this doublewall. Clearance to the mantle would be approx. 10'' from the outermost layer of pipe. Will this be enough?

I have a US Stove Co. Country Hearth model 2500. It does have a 6'' outlet. I was told I could use my 8'' s/s(take off from existing unused fireplace that came with house)without adverse affect on draft. Keep in mind I am new to this . I have read that double wall can reduce clearances down to 9'', however I was unsure that my setup was considered double wall and was unable to find the wording "stove pipe heat shield" that was referred to in the link- thank you for that. I have no pictures yet and my project is not complete- due to the fact that I am stuck with this. Thanks for your response.
A true double-wall pipe (manufactured and stamped approved by a certified company) can be reduced to as low as 6" of clearance. A single-wall pipe, with a heat shield attached to it (or to the surface of the wall), with 1" of clearance for an airgap, reduces the clearance from 18" to 9". So, if you have a heat shield around for 8" pipe, with atleast a 1" gap between the pipe and shield, you can have 9" of clearance to combustibles.
Something to think about, if you're worried about clearances... a metal shield mounted 1" from combustibles (ie, mount it on the wall with a spacer) reduces stove clearances by 66%, and single-wall pipe by 50%. So if your mounting a heat shield, you might want to mount it to the wall instead of to the pipe... gives you more protection from the stove too.

I guess what I am worried about is we still don't know what the "8'' s/s(take off from existing unused fireplace"is exactly. Is this fireplace a prefab metal unit.? Does it have a Class A Chimney? Is that chimeny 8 in? All of what northernontario has said is good information. It all just needs to be applied correctly and I am still not comfortable with what you have exactly. The 8" stainless is pre-fab taken off of a martin industries fireplace. The galvanized heat shield was taken from the same unit. I have so far built a stone corner hearth and attached 1/2" durock to the walls spaced at 1" which I intend to tile. I ask the clearance question because I want to top the wall with a wood mantle. It would be ridiculous to go through all of this just to install a wooden mantle too close to the pipe. As it stands, I will have 10" of clearance between the heat shield and the mantle.
